I think the Goth subculture is one of those things that so broad that what you look for is sort of what you see. You're talking about a lot of very specific things I'm not familiar with here, while totally missing things I am familiar with, like Japanese Goth music. Yes, artists like Gackt certainly borrowed a lot from European Post-Punk and New Wave scenes, but you can also argue that David Sylvian did a lot of borrowing from traditional Asian cultures. And a lot of the stuff Japanese Goth musicians like Gackt produced were a fusion of cultures and drew heavily on things like Kabuki theater.

However... I'll give you this:

1) I think that Goth is largely a Global North and Anglosphere thing. Like there's no way to argue it DOES NOT involve East Asian influences along with European influences and it's been a huge thing in Canada and the US. And the way those cultures merge in Goth and Post-Punk stuff is a pretty deep topic that I could write about quite a lot. Just as an example, look at David Sylvian's song "Canton" and the "Tin Drum" album in general, but then look at the outfit Gackt is wearing is his "Mizerable" video. I think, however, that European musicians very obviously referencing East Asian culture became less common over time due to the idea of "cultural appropriation." I DO NOT think "Canton" was about appropriation as much as it was appreciation or fascination for that style of music, but people would probably debate that now. Mostly that debate has never happened because it's too obscure lol.

and 2) I think in places like Rochester NY where whites feel marginalized, Goth *can* weirdly be a "safe space" for nerdy whites LOL. Talking about Rochester NY and race issues publicly makes me very very uncomfortable though, so that's absolutely a *private* conversation if you want to have it.

VERY provocative and intriguing article, Richard. Well written, clever and taught me much I didn't know (or put together) about Goth culture. As always, I try to distill my arguments down to the place where my thoughts diverge--whether twig, branch, trunk or root. I haven't read enough to be sure of your positions, so I'll state my guesses here and correct me if I'm wrong:

1. Hitler and the Nat'l Soc were on the right track to reject racial mixing and sexual divergence, but they took it a little too far with the whole killing thing.

2. Guilt over the killing part has caused a backlash against racial Euro-centrism.

3. Goth is a way to get back to that, except they allow mixed couples and sexual deviance.

4. Imperial decline is bad. Empire is good.

Where I differ is that Nat'l Socialism was an economic movement against the Rothschilds banking empire, and Hitler was a Rothschilds agent set up to undermine and invert it. Dachau held a majority of Catholics, not Jews. People in Israel want to erect a statue to Hitler, since his Transfer Agreement funded its development, without which it would never exist.

It's the cult of Set, of whom the Rothschilds are the most prominent current iteration, that prioritizes racial purity among the Air-yens/ Aryans/ sky gods. That's why 17 of 25 of Meyer Rothschild's direct descendants are intermarried, sometimes with uncles and nieces.

The cult of Set made violence sacred and sex profane because violence gave men power over women and sex gave women power over men. Of course, the first is an active imposition of power and the second is only the power to withhold, under the assumption it's men's right to take it. Big difference.

The root of our argument is whether empire is good and sovereignty is bad, or empire is bad and sovereignty good. Those are the only two sides in existence: power over others or power over ourselves. Both can never be true because they're mutually exclusive. I'm consistently on the side of sovereignty--mind, soul and body, which includes sexuality and who you share it with. Which means I like the direction of the Goth bands that are challenging the WW2ruths without using violence to enforce the false narratives of racial purity and sexual conformity.
